Open Farm Sunday Success at Spaunton Moor
Monday 9th June, 2008
Organised by the Moorland Association, Spaunton Moor, near Hutton-le-Hole threw open its gates to over 50 visitors on Sunday 1st of June who got up close to the birds, mammals, people and the habitat of this very special farm. The beautiful heather moorland that forms a backdrop to the North York Moors National Park is all carefully managed by farmers and moorland keepers working shoulder to shoulder to produce delicious red grouse and quality hill sheep.
Those that braved the very wet Sunday were rewarded with an exciting insight into how the moorland is looked after and were able to feed lambs, cuddle the Springer Spaniel gun dog puppies, stroke a Golden Eagle, meet ferrets, and have a go with the ‘giant water pistol’ for putting out devastating moorland fires.
The Hill family is new to the North York Moors area and Mrs Sarah Hill said after the event: “As someone who was born and brought up in the city it was fascinating to learn so much about the beautiful moorland that now surrounds me. The children especially enjoyed the animals and have been boasting to all their friends at how close they came to the Golden Eagle.”
Next year’s event will take place on Sunday 7th June, 2009.
