Boosting bees

6th July 2015

LAND managers and shoot organisers are being encouraged create habitats where bees can flourish.

Countryside groups, such as the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) and the Moorland Association say that shoots can pitch in by selecting nectar-rich plant species in wild bird covers, planting field margins with wildflower seeds and allowing beekeepers to place hives on land managed for shooing.

Moorland Association director, Amanda Anderson, commented: “The heather bloom found on moorlands in August offers a very late source of nectar, helping bees survive the winter and boosting egg production.”
