After 40 years of close involvement with the Moorland Association, Robert Benson has decided that the time has come to retire from his regional role with the MA.
Robert has been part of the Association’s story from the very beginning. He was one of the original founding Committee members when the MA was established in 1986 and went on to serve the Association with distinction over many years, including as Chairman from 2012 to 2017.
During that time, Robert played an important role in helping guide the MA through a significant period of change, including the Association’s incorporation and the establishment of a Board elected by the membership.
After standing down as Chairman, Robert later returned in a regional capacity, supporting members principally across the North Pennines, North Northumberland and Swaledale. In that role, as throughout his time with the MA, he brought deep knowledge, sound judgement and a strong personal commitment to the interests of grouse moor owners, managers, keepers and the wider upland community.
Robert’s contribution has extended well beyond formal meetings and titles. Over many years he has been a trusted source of advice, a strong advocate for moorland management, and a consistent supporter of those working on the ground. His knowledge of the grouse moor world, and the relationships he has built across it, have been of real value to the Association and its members.
Robert will not be stepping away from the moorland world entirely. He will continue to support the MA and to be involved in other related areas of work, including his work with the Moredun Institute on Louping Ill, the Wildfire Groups and the Heather Trust.
The Moorland Association is extremely grateful to Robert for everything he has done over such a long period of service. His contribution has been considerable, and we thank him warmly for his dedication, judgement and support over many years.
We wish Robert very well for the future.
