Wildfires are a serious threat to our precious uplands. They can devastate landscapes, endanger wildlife, and pose significant risks to communities. As land managers, we know you're often the first on the scene, with invaluable knowledge and resources that can make a real difference.
That's why The Moorland Association, in partnership with the England & Wales Wildfire Forum (EWWF), is championing an essential FREE training course designed specifically for you. This isn't just another course; it's about enhancing understanding and promoting safe systems of work when you find yourselves working alongside Fire and Rescue Services (FRS) during wildfire incidents.
Why This Training Matters
When a wildfire breaks out, the FRS takes legal control of the incident. However, they recognise the immense value that land managers bring to the table. You hold invaluable local knowledge, have access to specialist equipment and machinery, and are used to working in the open countryside.
This FREE training course takes 30-45 minutes and is designed to ensure you can be a positive asset at wildfires by becoming seamlessly integrated into the Incident Command System. It's about making sure everyone understands expectations, avoiding confusion, and contributing to the effective management of the emergency.
What You'll Learn in the Remote Learning Series
This training is delivered as a simple online course, covering five key topics to equip you with the knowledge needed to work safely and effectively alongside the FRS. These principles apply to both wild and prescribed fires.
Wildfire Introduction: Get a clear understanding of wildfire definitions, learn about prescribed fire, and cover essential general considerations and terminology.
FRS Liaison at Wildfires: Understand the crucial protocols for contacting and coordinating with the FRS Command Support or Incident Commander upon arrival at an incident.
Wildfire Prediction System (WiPS): Gain a basic understanding of how wildfires behave. Learn about the Factors of Alignment (Wind, Aspect, Fuel, Slope) and how they influence fire intensity, helping you predict the fire's future direction and intensity. Understanding these factors is vital for planning safe tactical responses.
Wildfire Safe System of Work - LACES: Learn the essential LACES protocol, a safe system of work for everyone attending a wildfire incident. LACES ensures that personnel are supervised, informed, and risks are continually assessed. It proactively identifies escape routes to safety and safety zones.
Working Safely with Air and Ground Assets: Understand how to work safely alongside helicopters (aerial assets), large machines like bulldozers and excavators (heavy plant), and power tools such as brushcutters and leaf blowers.
