When a family hike on Stanage Edge in the Peak District turned into a freezing nightmare, two local gamekeepers stepped up to save a life.
Last Thursday (19th February), 17-year-old Rheyah collapsed and lost consciousness in the snow as thick fog rapidly rolled in over the Peak District. With her daughter unresponsive on the freezing ground, Mum Carla faced a desperate wait for help.
Thankfully, Moscar Estate gamekeepers Tom and Thomas appeared through the fog on their quad bikes during their daily rounds.
Acting quickly and professionally, Tom:

🧥 Wrapped his own jacket around the freezing teenager
🚜 Evacuated the family off the hill to a warm estate workshop
Paramedics later confirmed Rheyah's blood sugar and pressure had dropped dangerously low. As international mountaineer Nigel Vardy noted about the rescue: "Once someone becomes a casualty in these conditions, they will chill in minutes... it was a life saver."
This isn't an isolated incident. Gamekeepers are often the hidden guardians of our uplands. In fact, recent data shows gamekeepers have assisted the public on over 1,500 occasions - including 63 full rescues.
