Golden Plover: The Moorland Wader That Does Best Where Predators Are Managed

The European golden plover is one of the defining birds of our uplands. It is also one of the clearest cases of a wader whose fortunes are tied to how the moor is managed.
A ground-nester in a landscape full of predators
Golden plover nest on the open ground, laying their eggs in a shallow scrape with no cover to speak of. That makes eggs and chicks easy pickings for foxes and carrion crows. Across the uplands, nest and chick predation is one of the main things standing between a pair of plover and a fledged brood.
This is the single fact that explains why moorland management matters so much for the species. Reducing the number of foxes and crows on the hill tends to help ground-nesting waders.
On grouse moors, gamekeepers control these predators year-round and golden plover benefit directly.
The strongest evidence: an eight-year experiment
Most of what we know about wildlife on grouse moors comes from comparing managed and unmanaged sites. Useful, but it cannot rule out the possibility that the birds were there for some other reason. One study gets round that problem, and it is the one worth highlighting.
An eight-year field experiment on moorland in northern England manipulated the abundance of legally controllable predators while keeping habitat conditions the same, then measured what happened to breeding birds.
Controlling foxes and crows cut fox abundance by 43% and crow abundance by 78%. The result for waders was substantial:
Golden plover, lapwing, curlew, red grouse and meadow pipit saw an average threefold increase in breeding success when predators were controlled.
These are levels of breeding success consistent with stable or growing populations.
Because habitat was held constant and predators were the thing being changed, this is genuine evidence of cause and effect, not just an association. It is the difference between "plover are found where keepers work" and "keepering helps plover succeed."
The density picture backs it up
The experimental result fits with what large surveys have found across the uplands.
A survey of 320 sample squares across eastern Scotland and northern England found breeding golden plover densities several times higher on managed grouse moors, and linked this to lower crow densities where predators were controlled.
A regional study of 18 estates found positive associations between predator control and the abundance of golden plover, curlew and snipe, with the effect for golden plover among the strongest.
Why this matters
Golden plover is amber-listed as a bird of conservation concern, and its UK breeding numbers have been in decline. For a species under that kind of pressure, the places where it still does well are the evidence base for what works.
The uplands where foxes and crows are kept in check are among the best breeding grounds golden plover have left in England. Losing that predator control, without something to replace it, would remove one of the few things shown by experiment to lift their breeding success.
