MA Draft Position Statement on Controlled Heather Burning

Controlled burn

The future of heather moorland management is at a crossroads. In light of mounting policy changes and growing debate, the Moorland Association has prepared a draft position statement on controlled heather burning.

This document sets out our beliefs, concerns, and evidence-based position on the use of controlled burning as a land management tool. It explains why we believe burning must remain an essential option, especially in areas where rewetting is not feasible and wildfire risks are increasing.

We’ve drawn on science, experience, and the knowledge of our members to outline a responsible, adaptive approach. This includes supporting accredited training, recognising the importance of site-specific management, and highlighting the unintended risks of blanket restrictions.

We realise that you may have thoughts about the document and so we’re opening the draft up for comment. Your insights matter, whether you’re a land owner, land manager, scientist, policy expert or member of the public who cares about the future of our uplands.
