When Official Tools Fail: Moorland Communities Step Up to Fight the 'Firewave'

Updated: 1 day ago

The July 2026 'Firewave' continues to challenge our landscapes, but the dedication of our moorland communities remains unwavering.

For nearly three weeks, the Crowden/Arnfield wildfire has been rumbling on through deep peat ignitions. With a very real threat of this fire merging with the Dovestone wildfire, vast expanses of vulnerable moorland habitat have been at risk of being engulfed.

On Sunday night, a rapid response from multiple shooting estates changed the course of the fire. Experienced gamekeepers and estate staff gathered their specialist equipment and worked relentlessly through the night. As dawn broke, their massive coordinated effort successfully extinguished the right flank of the fire.

The science behind this outbreak is clear. The National Gamekeepers' Organisation wildfire risk index correctly placed all moorland areas at 'extreme risk.' Experts including Claire Belcher and FireInSight warned of the '30/30/30' crossover creating the perfect storm for a wildfire disaster:

  • 30°C temperatures

  • 30mph winds

  • 30% humidity

Disappointingly, the government-recognized fire prediction tool failed to anticipate this severe risk window.

Relentless winds and intense heat are continuing to drive the fire and estate teams from across the moors have rallied resources, working tirelessly to combat this devastating blaze.

Heavy machinery is carving out fuel breaks toward Swineshaw Reservoir and Micklehurst Cricket Club is providing critical food/water drops for our frontline gamekeepers.

We are praying for the safety of all crews on the ground and are deeply mindful of the wide-reaching impact of the smoke. Please stay safe and avoid the area.

We are incredibly proud of the estates, staff, and gamekeepers who continue to protect these precious, vulnerable environments when official systems fell short.
